This week was a big week in fashion. The Council for the Fashion Designers of America, better known as the CFDA hosted their annual awards event in New York City, honoring those who’ve made an impact in fashion.
Those honorees included none other than fearless pop star, Rihanna who received the Fashion Icon award and stunned in a show stopping sheer dress created by designer Adam Selman. Her look was accompanied with long sheer gloves, a crystal-embellished headscarf, a fur shawl, and statement rings. This look was said to have been a homage to the late great Josephine Baker, whose 108th birthday was the on the Eve of the event.
This look did receive a lot of controversy and pretty much everyone had something to say about it. Some said that there was nothing wrong with the fact that it was sheer and that people need to see that the body is a work of art, that none of us should be ashamed of. Also that while she may be exposed, she is presented in a graceful way. While others, however, felt that there’s a fine line between sexy and trashy and that Rihanna has crossed it, not once but many times. A lot of people have even said that they’re “tired” of seeing her “naked”. Nonetheless fashion is ultimately about having fun, expressing yourself and making a statement; and Rihanna definitely did just that.
